A Step-by-Step Guide to House Wiring Installation for New Homes

26/07/2025
Understanding the basics of house wiring is essential for the safe and effective installation of electrical systems in new homes. This section explains why proper wiring matters and introduces the key components and terminology involved.

⚠️ Why Proper House Wiring Matters

Effective house wiring is critical for:

  • Safety: Poor wiring can cause electrical shocks, fires, or short circuits. Following safety standards protects lives and property.

  • Efficiency: Thoughtfully designed systems minimise energy waste and ensure consistent power delivery.

  • Legal Compliance: Meeting Irish regulations (like I.S. 10101) avoids penalties and ensures inspections and certifications are approved.

  • Performance: A well-wired home supports reliable operation of appliances, lighting, and smart technologies.

πŸ“ Planning

Before installation begins:

  1. We meet the Customer: We Mark locations for outlets, lights, switches, and the main Distribution panel based on plans provided or customers design ideas.

  2. We Calculate Electrical Load: Anticipate energy demands and assign circuits accordingly.

  3. Apply for an ESB Connection: The customer must obtain the correct supply is crucial, for example (12 or 16kva).

  4. Approved Quotation: We provide our customers with a detailed quotation based on their requirements.

πŸ—ΊοΈ 1st Fixing Layout & Design

A detailed wiring layout acts as a roadmap for your installation:

  • We Identify Room Needs: Determine lighting, outlet, and appliance requirements.

  • Separate Circuits: Avoid overloading by assigning key areas their own circuits.

  • Plan Wiring Routes: Use efficient paths that avoid interference or obstruction

  • Wiring Complete: Once all your house is fully wired its now ready for plastering/additional services.

πŸ§ͺ 2nd Fixing, Testing & Inspection

After installation of all switches, sockets, appliance outlets & consumer distribution board, thorough testing is required. The final step in the house wiring installation process is testing and inspection. This step ensures everything functions correctly and complies with safety standards. A Multifunction tester is used to carry out testing procedures on each circuit.

Pre-connection Test; a pre connection certificate is electronically sent to the Safe Electric/ESB based on the results of each circuit.

Once Safe Electric/ESB has approved the results, your home will now be connected to the ESB Network Supply.

Post Connection Test (PCT) is a mandatory inspection carried out after a new electrical installation (such as house wiring) has been connected to the ESB Networks supply. It ensures the installation meets safety and regulatory standards before it is energized.

A Certificate of Compliance & Test Records are provided for the customer on completion of installation.

Schedule Inspections: We generally recommend to have a periodic electrical inspection report (PIR) every 10 years for owner-occupied homes & every 5 years for rented properties. Landlords are legally required to have this inspection done for rental properties.
